Spinal Problems Spinal problems are common and sometimes painful. Neck and back pains affect the majority of Americans at some point in their life. Bulging or hernited discs, sprains and strains, and nerve problems all have one thing in common. They all respond favorably to chiropractic adjustments in the vast majority of cases. Spinal manipulation done by chiropractors is very safe, even for very painful conditions. There are a lot of methods that chiropractors have developed for adjusting the spine and pelvis. We use a lot of Gonstead technique, Thompson drop table, and Impulse instrument adjusting among others. We believe it is important not to neglect the soft tissues such as the muscles and connective tissues, so we do a lot of myofascial release techniques and rehabiliation procedures. The vertebral distraction pump An instrument used to gently traction and stretch tight joints and to create negative pressure in bulging discs to suction them back in. Impulse Adjusting instrument Used to gently and repetativly tap locked vertebra back into motion and to relax tight muscles.
Headaches & Migraines
MIGRAINES and Other HEADACHES Headaches can really dampen your spirits and your life. There are lots of causes of headaches, as headaches are simply a complex symptom. Tension headaches are probably the most common of headaches. They are usually related to jaw or spinal alignment and muscle tension and usually respond very well to chiropractic care. This has been reported by a Duke University study on headaches. Often headaches of this type start to improve immediately. Migraine headaches also have several origins. Dr. Clarence Gonstead found that many migraine’s have associations with hormonal related origins due to nerve pressure in the spine affecting the sympathetic nervous system. By balancing the nervous system and adjusting areas of the spine related to the adrenal hormones, sex hormones, and thyroid gland he was able to achieve successful relief for migraine sufferers. We continue to use his systems and approaches to help migraine sufferers resolve their headache problems. There are often lifestyle & diet triggers which need to be found and eliminated to control migraines, and for those willing to make the changes, results can be very satisfactory.
Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia
Chronic Fatigue and FibromyalgiaWe’ve been taking a special interest in fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue patients since the 1980’s. We’ve recognized the symptoms and began developing a basic protocol to address the main problem areas of fibromyalgia (and chronic fatigue which is similar and related) before the disease was recognized. The protocol must be individualized to each patient, to achieve positive results with fibromyalgia. A generalized cookie cutter approach just doesn’t work well with each unique, yet similar, fibromyalgia patient. While fibromyalgia does not have a magic bullet cure, there are definitely approaches which can often reduce the pain and problems of fibromyalgia. The areas of stress on the body we investigate and approach with fibromyalgia are: · Spinal imbalances · Muscle and soft tissue tightness · Nutrition/dietary issues · Sleep problems · Exercise/stretching · Stress/psychosocial issuesThere are usually several problems to varying degrees in more than one of the areas listed above. Some problems can be addressed in a short period of time, however most patients require a slow delicate approach in several problem areas to achieve relief. Progress in therapy must be carefully tailored to the individual. While all areas often must be addressed (or at least analyzed), there…
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome The carpal tunnel is the bridge of bones in your wrist through which the nerves and blood vessels to the hand pass through. The symptoms of carpal tunnel is typically tingling or ‘falling asleep’ of the fingers, typically the thumb and first two fingers. Wrist and hand pain may accompany carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). When people have these symptoms they often jump to the carpal tunnel diagnosis, as do many doctors. There are however, several other causes of pain and tingling/numbness in the hand. Chiropractors are trained to test orthopedically to determine whether the cause is in the wrist (carpal tunnel), elbow, shoulder girdle (thoracic outlet), or neck. It is very common to have a combination of two of these problems develop before the patient feels it’s time to go see what’s wrong. Fortunately, chiropractic and physiotherapy techniques that chiropractors use are usually adequate to treat hand pain including carpal tunnel without surgery. Many patients are unaware that surgery is not always necessary or recommended for carpal tunnel syndrome. The problem with surgery is that scar tissue that the body forms in response to the surgery often can lead to a worse case of CTS! That is…
Knee Pain [caption id="attachment_52" align="alignnone" width="99" caption="Knee diagram"][/caption] Knee pain can vary from being a simple to very complex problem. It is a symptom you don’t want to just wait and see if it goes away on its own because it will likely return years later with much more difficulty to resolve. Knee surgery, knee replacements and cortisone shots have become very common, but are they necessary or even the best solution? Not always. Cortisone shots decrease inflammation, which can be beneficial, but they don’t usually address the cause of the irritation causing the inflammation (and there are long term side-effects). We’ve had many patients with knee pain remaining after surgery also. So what can be done for knee pain? Traditional chiropractic adjustments have been used for probably a hundred years now to alleviate knee problems. Sometimes the knee or knee meniscus needs adjusted for better alignment of the joint and for the meniscus tears to line up to heal. Other times the problem lies in the foot or ankle joints or even the hip or pelvis and the knee pain is just from compensating, so adjusting other areas may resolve the problem. Muscles can shorten, weaken or…
Jaw/Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
[caption id="attachment_41" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="TMJ joint and associated muscles"][/caption] TMJ (TMD) Temporomandibular Joint Dysfuntions (Jaw Joint) TMJ is a condition in which dysfunction at the jaw joint causes pain or other health problems. Associated problems can be simple joint problems such as clicks/pops, pain, and tracking problems, or they can be complex and far reaching health conditions. The jaw innervation of the Fifth cranial nerve has interesting implications. The nucleus to the fifth cranial nerve is in the spinal cord in the neck and often extends down to the fifth cervical level. Because excessive neurological input from the TMJ problem can excessively excite the spinal cord in the neck, many obscure conditions can be a result of TMJ problems. Headaches in the temples are often related to TMJ for instance. Many people realize they have a problem with their jaw, but don’t know what to do about it. Even dentists who frequently have close observation of the joint have disagreements about how to diagnose TMD and whether problems can exist. Perhaps it is more of a concern about liability, since having the jaw open for extended periods of time is frequently thought to aggravate the joint. However, so can…
Scope of Practice
Laser Light Therapy What Is Light or Low Level Laser Therapy? Light and low-level laser therapy is the application of red and near infrared light over injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. Light therapy uses cold (subthermal) laser or LED light energy to direct bio-stimulative light energy of specific wavelengths to the body’s cells without injuring or damaging them in any way. The therapy is precise and accurate; and offers safe and effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions. The energy range of low level laser light lies between 1 and 500 mW (milliwatts), while for surgical lasers the energy range lies between 3000 and 10000 mW. How Does Low Level Laser Therapy Work? Low-level lasers supply energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light. Light is transmitted through the skin’s layers (the dermis, epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin) at all wavelengths in the visible range. However, light waves in the near infrared ranges penetrate the deepest of all light waves in the visible spectrum. When low level laser light waves penetrate deeply into…
